  BOND & ARGENTINA

The first mention of Argentina in the films came from the lips of none other than Ernst Stavro Blofeld in You Only Live Twice, when in the final scenes he orders some of his agents to transfer large sums of money earned in extortions to SPECTRE’s bank accounts in Buenos Aires, the opposite of what criminals living in said city do, who send their dirty money to accounts in Switzerland or the Caiman Islands in the Caribbean!

In Thunderball SPECTRE celebrates a meeting in its secret base in Paris and one of the issues to discuss is the drug traffic from China to the US, then a SPECTRE agent makes a comment about SPECTRE losing market from heavy competition coming from Latin America. In the original script by Jack Wittingham based on Ian Fleming’s novel, competition came from Bolivia and Argentina, but the producers chose to make no reference to those nations in the final draft.

For the shooting of Moonraker the production moved to Brazil & Argentina, filming scenes in Rio and showing all its tourist attractions. 007’s boat chase sequence was shot in the Iguazu falls on Argentina’s side, taking full advantage of the beauty of this location, the Iguazu National Park.

Even though no reference is made in the movie, in the end credits the producers thank the Argentinian government and National Park for their assistance in the making of the film.

In Die Another Day, M is the one making the reference when she threatens to send Bond to an evaluation center in the Falklands Islands.

Then is M again who later in the movie explains to 007 details about millionaire Gustav Graves’ past involving business in an Argentinian diamond mine, a total fabrication of writers Purvis & Wade since Argentina is notorious for being rich in minerals but diamonds are only found in the finest and exclusive jewel stores!

When Die Another Day premiered in Argentina, local media wrongly informed that the film’s main villain was an Argentinian, this is of course completely false as anyone who saw the movie would confirm.
